Naturally, Libby sent him to her old friend and brilliant plastic surgeon, who else and where else!
Libby explained the whole family noticed at birth Tylers ears did protrude more than average. A surprise in as much a,s nobody in either Mother or Dads side of the family possessed ears which jutted out. It was unanimously decided, that it should Tyler’s eventual decision whether or not he wanted a surgical correction.
As time went on nobody in the family or friends seemed to take any notice of it. Actually, the protruding ears gave him an angelic, endearing, and quite a mischievous appearance. At school, he was very popular, bold, self-confident, and not in anyway a “shrinking violet”.
But as we anticipated once he passed a certain age we began to hear from Tyler a mentions of few taunts and malicious teasing. We knew it would happen as we all remember similar kind of incidents, when at school ourselves. As the old saying goes -Children can be wicked!”. So, we put it to Tyler did he want the procedure to be done? Unhesitatingly he replied -YES.
We decided a good time would be school summer holiday. Moreover, he was starting a new school so no comparison would be made about his change in appearance.
We discussed with him the option of either a general anaesthetic or local. He decided very quickly he wanted a local anaesthetic. We were advised that apart from the injections (ten each side ) he would feel nothing during the operation and little pain post op. He told us he felt reassured know that we told him on numerous occasion Czechs are the best plastic surgeon in the world. Indeed we got him to look up Professor Frantisek Burian who was regarded as the modern day (1912) pioneer in the discipline of plastic surgery.

“I cant say it was enjoyable. But the surgeon and my dad both being football fanatics managed to keep my mind off what was going on. Apparently, the surgeon was a youth team player for Sparta Prague. It seemed the procedure was over very quickly and I honestly can say there was absolutely no pain.”
Post op. Otoplasty Ear Pinning
I was given some pain management tablets and bandage changes. The bandages were not to prevent any blood seeping, but entirely to maintain/support my ears in their new position. I can say that post-op there was no pain- zero-only some occasional throbbing. 10 days on the throbbing has gone, and I feel 100% fine. But I have to be careful and this means keeping the bandage and ears swabs on for a few more weeks. When I start my new school I can keep the headband off during school time but no PE. I have a letter to give to my head teacher requesting a dispensation.
Oh, -the stitches are dissolving!
